National Anthem
|
|
The composer of the
National Anthem, the late Encik Zubir Said, had written it
on the basis of two words, "Majulah Singapura" or
" Onward Singapore".
The patriotic song was first performed by the Singapore
Chamber Ensemble on the opening of the renovated Victoria
Theatre. It was launched on 3 December 1959 together with
the National Flag and the State Crest, at the installation
of the new Head of State, Yang di-Pertuan Negara, at the
City Hall steps.
Upon independence in 1965, "Majulah Singapura" was
adopted as the Republic's National Anthem.
However, a newer version of the Singapore Anthem was launched on 19th January 2001.
It was made grander than the one before, and somewhat more inspiring. It was done through
accumulation of more than a year's work by the Ministry of Information and the Arts. Several leading
local composers were also invited to help out in the work. The tempo of the orchestration is set
lower as well as more instruments being used to create the majestic feel.
All the recordings were done on 20th November 2000 by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra with Lim Yau at the
helm. The English translation of the lyrics were also revised to provide a better understanding.
