1819 - 1945 Colonial Period

This period saw Singapore under British rule, the
fall of our country into Japanese hands during World War II, the fight put up by our resistance fighters, and the disillusionment of our forefathers when the British returned to rule them.

1945 - 1955 Political Awakening
|
The next phase saw the exploitation of racial sensitivities by the communists to further their political goals and the religious tension surrounding the Maria Hertogh riots. This was also a period where our country achieved limited self-government through the partially elected Legislative Assembly and where support for political parties were rallied along racial lines.

1961 - 1963 Battle for Merger
|
The battle for merger raged internally with the Communists campaigning against the merger
concept, as well as on the international plane, when President Soekarno launched his policy of Confrontation. However, the Referendum of 1962 confirmed the belief that reunification with Malaya was the way for Singapore to survive the communist threat, and later, gain independence.

1963 - 1965 Merger Years
|
|
Our past differences with Malaysia in terms of political ideology, policy on racial equality and disagreement over the Common Market proposal culminated in the Separation from Malaysia in 1965. Singapore, however, held firm to the principles of meritocracy and multiracialism. The events, which preceded the Separation, like the racial riots in 1964, again demonstrated our vulnerabilities to exploitation of race and religious issues.
