Primary
school education is made up of six years, which can be further divided into four
years of foundation stage from primary one to four and two years of orientation
stage from primary five to six.
All
students at the foundation stage follows the same curriculum which provides them
with a firm foundation in English, their mother tongue and Mathematics. Other
subjects that are included are Music, Arts and Craft, Civics and Moral
Education, Health Education, Social Studies and Physical Education. Students are
also strongly encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities.
At
the end of primary four, students are streamed according to their learning
ability. All students are then allowed to advanced to the next stage of their
primary education, the orientation stage. In the orientation stage, students are
placed in one of the three language streams, namely EM1, EM2 and EM3. Students
in EM1 and EM2 do English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics and Science. Students in
EM1 may have the option of doing higher Chinese/Malay/Tamil as their Mother
Tongue. Students in EM3 do foundation English, basic Chinese and Foundation
Mathematics.
At
the end of Primary six, students will then sit for the Primary School Leaving
Examination (PSLE) which will access their abilities and then decide on their
placements in secondary school courses which suit their learning pace and
aptitude. Students who have obtained the necessary standards required will then
be admitted to Special, Express and Normal stream in secondary schools.
